What is Paleo?

Paleo refers to the selective application of principles of the diet and lifestyle of humans living during the paleolithic era, which extended from roughly 2.5 million years ago to 10,000 years ago. Paleolithic humans were bigger, faster, and stronger than their modern day counterparts, and they lived free of many of the diseases of civilization that currently plague us.

Paleo is not living like a caveman. We avoid pizza and soda, but we’re not sleeping in a cave. We lift heavy weights, but we’re not hunting animals with spears. Paleo is about applying principles of life in the paleolithic era to the modern world to improve quality of life.

For millions of years humans were strong, lean, and capable hunters and gatherers. About 10,000 years ago, with the birth of agriculture, we began eating foods we didn’t evolve to eat and adopting increasingly sedentary lifestyles. Look around you to see the effects of this. You probably know several people with cancer, diabetes, heart disease, or obesity.

Over the years, you’ve probably been frustrated with diet and fitness. You lose weight. You gain it back. You lift weights but you don’t gain any muscle. You eat “healthy” but get colds, the flu, and other health problems. Is paleo the solution? It could be. We think a paleo diet and lifestyle is a simple and easy way to optimal health and fitness.
